I finally added Bluesky comments and likes to my blog (and you can too!)
TL;DR: I just added Bluesky likes and comments to my blog posts in about an hour using some copy-paste and vibe code magic. Now I want to see if it actually works — so please test it out below! 👇
Several months ago I bookmarked this brilliant article from Salma Alam-Naylor, thinking “someday I’ll add Bluesky integration to my blog”? Well, that someday finally came after an inspiring conversation with Nick Gerakines on our podcast about ATProto and the future of decentralized social media.
Why I Finally Did This
I’ve been wanting an easy way for people to engage with my illustrations and blog posts without the friction of traditional comment systems. Bluesky felt like the perfect middle ground — it’s where I already hang out, and the ATProto integration opens up some fascinating possibilities.
The “Vibe Coding” Approach
I’ll be honest: I didn’t architect some elegant solution. I ✨ vibe coded ✨ my way through this in true developer fashion:
- Copy-pasted Salma’s examples (with gratitude!)
- Added a comments section inspired by Ashley Willis’ approach
- Asked Copilot to make it look decent with Tailwind CSS
- Deployed and called it a day
The result? This gist that you can absolutely steal for your own Astro site. It’s not perfect, but it works!
Now I Need Your Help!
This is where you come in — I want to test this thing out! If you’re reading this and you have a Bluesky account:
- Give this post a like on Bluesky (if you found it helpful)
- Drop a comment sharing your thoughts on Bluesky integration
- Tell me about your own blog setup — are you using Bluesky? Other social integrations?
- Share any improvements you’d make to my admittedly hacky code
I’m curious to see how this performs in the wild and whether it actually encourages more engagement than traditional comment systems.
What’s Next?
Could I refactor this into something more elegant? Absolutely. Will I? Maybe someday when I have more than an hour to spare! For now, I’m just excited to see those Bluesky interactions show up below.
What do you think? Did this integration help you at all? Any bugs or suggestions? Let me know in the comments below (powered by Bluesky!) or find me @brittanyellich.com.
